Podcast #19: Now Leaving the Year 200X Posted on 2010-01-07 05:28:48

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but 2009 is over. Like, there will be no more 2009. Ever again. Well, until the year 12009, but I'm not sure we'll be able to get the whole GameCola crew to do another podcast then.

Right; podcast. That's what I'm writing about. Michael Ridgaway, Zach Rich, Justin Luschinski, Alex Jedraszczak, Colin Greenhalgh, and sometimes Vangie Rich and Michael Gray all got together for a podcast to ring out the old year and bring in the New Year, which you know is gonna be better 'cuz it's written with Capital Letters.

Mega Man 10. Muffins. Dragon Age. Talking to a woman like she's a dog. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. A cat attack. God of War III. Halo: Reach. Singing. This podcast has it all, and you listen to it while Michael Gray entertains you with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the GameCola YouTube channel. Or, you could just stick around a while and check it out here:

Remember that podcast that Michael and Paul kept to themselves? The totally off-topic one? Well, now you can listen to it while Michael plays Mega Man Zero 3 in the background. Check it oooouuuuutt:

When Michael and Paul got together to record Podcast #18: Michael and Paul's Excellent Adventure, they found themselves getting off-topic a lot. So much, in fact, that when they cut all the off-topic stuff out of the podcast, there was enough leftover to make a whole new podcast. So they did, and you're listening to it right now.

The GameCola higher-ups decided to call this podcast Off-Topic #1, instead of The GameCola Podcast #19, for two reasons:

1) To allow for more future podcasts that are just cobbled together from leftover podcast clips, and
2) Because the rest of the staff would be mad if GameCola allowed Michael and Paul to have two entire podcasts to themselves again.

Here's what you get to listen to in this podcast:
  • Intro (0:00 - 1:54)
  • GameCola columns and writers (1:54 - 6:17)
  • Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials (6:17 - 15:17)
  • Audio books, and the people who read them (15:17 - 17:40)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the Turtles Forever crossover special (17:40 - 21:17)
  • Anime, because Michael and Paul know a lot about it (21:17 - 23:38)
  • Mega Man's family and follies (23:38 - 27:27)
  • Paul's notes for Podcast #18 (27:27 - 28:44)
  • The Gates of Life in the new GameCola (28:44 - 30:23)
  • GameCola on YouTube and Facebook (30:23 - 34:27)
  • GameCola on Wikipedia and TVTropes (34:27 - 36:10)
  • Outro (36:10 - 36:36)

In case you missed it on YouTube, here's the latest GameCola Podcast, in podcast form! From Michael Gray:

It's Podcast 18, where Paul Franzen and Michael Gray talk about Deja Vu for the NES/GBC/PC/MAC, and Case 1-3 of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for the DS. Michael and Paul were supposed to limit their conversations on these games to 10 minute segments, but they ended up talking so much that it filled up a whole podcast. Whoops! Here are the show notes:

Deja Vu (0:00 to 16:30):
  • We start talking about former GameCola writer Neal Iannone.
  • The plan to get cool, matching GameCola jerseys fell through.
  • It's somewhat amazing that Deja Vu was released for the NES, given its M-rated content.
  • Walkthroughs often contain spoilers, believe it or not.
  • Paul lists all the various death scenes in TestGame.exe: Making the Adventure. Is
  • the Game Boy Color version of the game better than the NES version? We conclude the PC version must be best.
  • Neal Iannone, GameCola misses you.
Phoenix Wright, Case 3 (16:30 to end):
  • We start by getting off-topic and discussing scenes that aren't actually in the game.
  • We talk about anime, despite our complete lack of knowledge about it.
  • Oddly enough, Maya does not have fun defending her idol from false charges.
  • Naming all the characters a pun--a good idea or a bad idea? Paul doesn't like it, Michael's okay with it.
  • Michael blatantly plugs his latest Phoenix Wright fanfic, Pearl Saves the Future.
  • This case blatantly rips off of The Gates of Life with its leet-speak characters.
  • The localizers did an awesome job with the Phoenix Wright series. The people who translated the manga books? Not such a good job.
  • We return to discussing the plot of the case, which is what we're supposed to be doing, by the way.
  • Does Phoenix secretly bear a grudge against Mia?
  • We talk about the upcoming Wii-Ware Phoenix Wright releases, and the possibility that this is leading up to the release of some new Phoenix Wright material.
  • Paul does not like Apollo Justice.
  • Michael attempts to explain Nathaniel Hoover's comments on Case 1-3, even though he doesn't completely remember what Nathaniel said.
  • Edgeworth's change-of-heart near the end of the case is an example of character development.
  • Paul still does not like Apollo Justice. He also has never played it, by the way.
  • Paul likes how Phoenix never defends guilty people.
  • Phoenix Wright 3 lost Game of the Year to Bioshock in the GameCola end of year awards for 2007. In fact, Best Portable for that year is the only award we've given a Phoenix Wright game.
  • Professor Layton didn't win a Game of the Year
  • Paul misses Matt Wright, SpriteMonkey, and Travis Combs.
  • Do people want us to make a theme song for The GameCola Podcast?

Michael and Paul recorded a top-secret podcast. Normally, podcast topics are things that I know nothing about and can't relate to at all, such as the PS3 price cut, and what games I've been playing recently. This time, when the topics are things I'm actually knowledgable about, such as the adventure game Deja Vu and the first three cases of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and anime and former staff writers whose articles I've actually read, they decide to hold a clandestine podcast and not invite me.

Bitterness dictates that I should burn down the Internet in rage, but I am contractually obligated to share this fun podcast with you, the way podcasts were meant to be listened to: on video. To help hold your attention, or possibly to confuse you, Michael silently plays Nancy Drew: It's Really Freakishly Cold Outside during each video.

Watch it, and petition them to invent a time machine so I can join in:

Furthermore, if you have no idea what this "Deja Vu" game is that they keep talking about, take a look at Michael's walkthrough-quality run of the GBA version and/or Paul's run of the NES version, where he does everything wrong and still somehow manages to beat the game. We love both versions.

Also, I have ulterior motives for making you watch the Deja Vu videos... bwahaha! (You'll just need to wait and see! BwaHAha!)

The title about sums things up, but I'm unnaturally verbose, so I've gotta talk about this at least a little bit. We've got a podcast of Paul Franzen, Matt Jonas, Nathaniel Hoo--erm, me, Michael Gray, and Lizo Medina-Gray talking about videogames, etc. whilst somebody plays the SNES game Krusty's Super Fun House in the background. 'Cuz, you know, it wouldn't be much of a video if you didn't have anything to look at.

Well, now you've got something to look at.

This podcast was recorded individually by each participant and then edited together; things we discuss include the PlayStation 3 price cut, what makes licensed games good/bad, and what games we're playing now. Things we do NOT discuss include why the audio quality of one of my segments suddenly turns to junk.

If you'd like to relive the magic of GameCola Podcast #17 in your own kitchen, here's the recipe for Lizo's World-Famous Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies.

(This recipe was modified from this.)

Ingredients:

1 cup canned or cooked pumpkin
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 egg
2 cups all-purpose white flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinamon
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Combine pumpkin, sugar, oil, vanilla, and egg. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, spices, and salt. Mix wet ingredients with dry ingredients. Add chocolate. Bake at 350 degrees until firm (about 12 minutes).

"Hello, everyone. Paul here, hosting and editing the latest edition of "The GameCola Podcast," because...because...actually, I'm not sure how I got saddled with this. I think somebody must've died.

Anyway, we've got a great show lined up for you! GC newbie Matt Jonas, Nathaniel Hoover, Michael Gray, Elizabeth Medina-Gray, and myself all talk about the recent PS3 price cut, licensed videogames, and the games we're all playing right now.

There are cookies, and there's also a big twist: We all recorded our own podcast segments individually, instead of recording the podcast together on Skype. We did this because we wanted to allow people who aren't normally able to join the podcast to participate---some people are in different time zones, some people don't have hours of free time to talk about Mega Man, but everyone should have 20 minutes to spare at some point in their day, right?

Well, at least we got Matt Jonas to participate. Enjoy the podcast!"

Good news, all: We recorded another podcast this week, and we might just have it ready for you before the end of the month so that our commentary is still relevant. Maybe.

Assuming Michael doesn't edit my voice out of the final cut of the podcast, you'll hear me mention a website called The Backloggery, where you can keep track of every game you own and how many games you've actually beaten. It's neat to see exactly how much of your collection you've played through, and there are a lot of bonus features as well, so I'd say it's worth a visit:

http://www.backloggery.com/

And if you're stalking me and want to know what kinds of video game(s) I play other than Mega Man (if any), you can check out my personal backloggery:

http://www.backloggery.com/Flashman85

The next bit of news is about the GameCola YouTube channel: Due to copyright infringement concerns, we've removed every trace of Paul Franzen's work from the channel, because everyone knows he just steals everyone else's work and takes credit for it.

Wait, no, that's not it.

We just removed the Interactive Vision playthroughs--the edutainment ones with Disney and Sesame Street footage--so don't expect any more of those any time soon. However, rumor has it that there's a YouTube channel called GCIntVis that contains strikingly similar videos, so maybe you can get your fix there.

This means that we're short on new content this week for the official GameCola channel, but I'll hopefully be able to finish the next Flash Flood video in the next few days, in which I play a Flash game very poorly and disguise my lousy skill with my charming personality. Stay tuned.

Phoenix Wright, Drama Queen Posted on 2009-10-05 17:27:16

This'll be a busy week for the GameCola YouTube page, folks; here's a heads-up of what's there, and tidings of the rubbish to come.

I mean, uh, great stuff.

The next round of videos are ready for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Episode 5: Rise from the Ashes: This Title Is Too Long. One or two new videos from the set will go up each day for the rest of the week. Take a gander at what we've got so far:

Also available is the first half of The GameCola Podcast #15, sequel to The GameCola Podcast #14, in which a whole bunch of yahoos from the staff get together to play the Nintendo DS game Drama Queens.

Unfortunately, we don't actually get to see any of the gameplay because it's a podcast, and you can't see words. Instead, you're treated to oversized pictures of an oversized cheeseburger, Paul Franzen, and other staff members. Normally I would name the other staff members who participated, but the way the previous sentence is worded, there's a much greater chance you'll think I'm calling Paul Franzen an oversized cheeseburger, which is funny.

Come hither and listen to the ridiculousness:

Greetings, GameCola fans! For those of you afraid that GameCola was truly dead, fear not! We are only in a hibernative state while the new site comes online. Think of it as a coccoon, except instead of Wilford Brimley emerging you get snazzy videogame coverage and humor (and no diabetus).

In the meantime, we have part two of our Drama Queens podcast, featuring Paul Franzen, Mike Ridgaway, Captain Eric, Vangie Rich, and Matt Gardner enjoying a Mario Party-like game for the DS where players journey around a mall as vapid, petty teenage girls. Get out the scratching post, because things are about to get catty.

Remember how Podcast 13 was made into a Youtube video?  Well, the same thing happened with Podcast 14!

I tried to match the staff pictures with the person who's talking, but that proved to be a large challenge because it takes a lot of time, and I don't know what everyone's voice sounds like. On a positive note, the picture of everyone being a drama queen turned out quite nice.

GameCola's new podcast has just been posted!

We have a special treat for you in this podcast. This time around, we have GameCola staff members Paul Franzen, Captain Eric, Mike Ridgaway, Matt Gardner, and Vangie Rich all together (in the same place!) playing Paul's new game, Drama Queens. It's a Mario Party-style game for the DS, and it brings out the cattiest parts of the everyone involved except, ironically, Vangie. Enjoy!

The newest podcast is finally officially posted! If you didn't listen to Michael's download from last week, you can check it out now. This podcast features Michael Gray, Michael Ridgaway, Zach Rich, and Nathaniel Hoover, and topics discussed include:
  • The new GameCola
  • Save points: good or bad?
  • People are more excited for re-releases than completely new games.
  • Some series (ie. Sonic) get away with making millions off of bad games, just because of the license.
  • Batman Begins is a franchise reboot, not a remake. Michael Gray doesn't really understand the difference.
  • Live multiplayer is better than online multiplayer.
  • Michael Ridgaway played the Ghostbusters game, tried to play Tales of the Abyss and is playing Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon.
  • Zach wants to see a game with Bowser as the main character.
  • Voice acting in the Mario games.
  • Nathaniel Hoover is playing Tales of Symphonia, Dragon Warrior 3 and Final Fantasy VIII.
  • Michael Gray is playing Nancy Drew: Ransom of the Seven Ships, Duck Tales 2 (both the NES and GameBoy versions) and Kwirk.
  • Zach Rich is playing Pokemon Red, Sam and Max: Season One, Magic: The Gathering, Peggle, The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, and Mass Effect 2.
  • Everyone discusses the upcoming Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal.
